PROJECT REPORT

Project Overview

This project involved the internship position I was chosen for at the St. George Clinic. While there, I had the wonderful opportunity to work alongside doctors and their patients. I was able to receive training and acquire necessary skills and abilities that I will need upon graduation from both Southern Utah University and medical school. Aside from learning the working parts of a doctor’s office, this was a great opportunity to be an example of hard work and diligence.

As the St. George Clinic switched from one electronic records system to another, a lot of my time there was spent re-documenting patients’ medical records. I worked about twenty-one hours a week for two months updating electronic medical records and notifying patients of needed tests and services. However, I was also able to observe many of the doctor-patient interactions and was exposed to and gained confidence in medical terminology in regard to patients’ diagnoses and medicines. This is an important skill for my chosen field of study because I will know how to communicate important information to patients and build both personal and professional relationships with them when I myself become a doctor.

Project Details

The main goal of my project was to gain first-hand experience in a doctor’s office working with patients by learning skills and abilities that a general physician is in need of every day. I was able to complete training in both HIPAA and OSHA protocol. I also completed training for two electronic medical records systems (EMRs) for the input and transfer of patient data.

Another goal for this project was to help me become a better candidate for medical school as well as to become a better doctor upon graduation from medical school. I worked hard to gain knowledge in as many areas as I could of the working parts of a doctor’s office.

By working diligently to learn as much as I could from this internship, this opportunity provided me with essential skills for my future career as a medical doctor. By gaining hands-on experience, I have been able to expand my knowledge of medical terminology for medical diagnoses and medicines.

By learning how to interact well with patients, nurses and assistants, and doctors, I have been able to contribute to a large portion of the St. George Clinic’s patient database thereby assisting doctors and nurses in their work as well as patients in their medical care.
